Expert Turn to Barrel: Introducing a new wave type at Alaïa Bay

New wave at Alaïa Bay?

If you have surfed Alaïa Bay before, you probably know the choice.

You book a turn session because you want space to push your surfing on the open face. Or you book a barrel session because you want to work on positioning, your line and getting comfortable under the lip.

This September and October, those two approaches come together in one wave.

Expert Turn to Barrel is one of the latest waves developed by Wavegarden, and it will be available at Alaïa Bay for a limited time only.

So, what does the wave actually feel like?

To show you what to expect before paddling out, Alaïa Bay coaches Elena Berot and Theo Schers take you through the new setting, from the take off and open first section to the transition into the barrel.

How is it different from our regular barrel sessions?

In Expert Turn to Barrel, the takeoff feels more natural, and the opening section is less hollow than in the standard barrel setting. This gives you enough time and space to complete a proper turn.

Then the barrel arrives, not as thick or curved as in our standard barrel settings, but with just enough lip to tuck into the tube and come out at full speed.

The combination of these two wave types flows naturally, creating an experience that feels much like surfing a real ocean wave.

Who is the session for?

Expert Turn to Barrel is designed for advanced surfers who already have experience with sessions such as Expert Turn,Expert Barrel or Easy Barrel.

You will want to be confident with a powerful take off, committed turns and barrel positioning before jumping into this one.

Helmets are mandatory during the session and are available free of charge at Alaïa Bay.

Only here for September and October

Expert Turn to Barrel is a limited edition wave and will only be running during September and October 2026.

The calendar is now open (search for the purple icon).
