Capturing Waves Differently: Behind the Lens with Javi & Jose Postigo

When you think of surf cinematography, the Alps probably aren’t the first location that comes to mind.

But for filmmakers Javi and Jose Postigo, the precision of Alaïa Bay offered something they couldn’t find anywhere else — the perfect wave, on repeat.

Their latest vlog, now live on their new YouTube channel, takes viewers behind the scenes of a session that blends creativity and control, showing how surf filmmaking evolves when the ocean’s unpredictability gives way to engineered perfection.

Chapter 1From Unpredictability to Precision

“In the ocean, everything is unpredictable,” says Javi.

“Waves, currents, weather… you adapt on the go.”

It’s the challenge every surf filmmaker knows: reacting fast, constantly adjusting, and hoping the next set lines up just right.

But inside Alaïa Bay, things shift.

“You know exactly when and where the wave will break,” explains Jose.

“That lets you focus entirely on composition, light, and timing. It’s the ideal setup to experiment, to push new ideas.”

The pool’s reliability becomes a creative tool. Instead of chasing the perfect moment, they can build it, testing new lenses, angles, and underwater shots until the vision matches the frame.

Chapter 2Freedom Within Boundaries

Even in a controlled space, filming in the pool has its rhythm and responsibilities.

“Safety always comes first,” says Javi. “You stay clear of the surfer’s line, respect the entry zones, and keep communication open with the operators. It feels safe, but it still keeps you focused.”

For the Postigo brothers, surf cinematography isn’t just about the perfect manoeuvre — it’s about emotion.

“I look for moments that show what the surfer feels,” says Javi. “A turn, a wipeout, a smile — those small, honest reactions.”

And the pool’s predictability amplifies those moments.

“There were a few barrels where the light was perfect,” adds Jose. “Being able to repeat the same wave helped us capture shots that would be nearly impossible in the ocean.”

Chapter 3A New Space for Creativity

For creators stepping into this space, their advice is simple: know the wave.

“If you understand how it breaks, your footage will instantly improve,” says Javi.

And don’t overcomplicate things.

“Keep your setup simple so you can focus on the story.”

From their perspective, “Alaïa Bay is the best place to learn and push your creativity,” they agree. “Everything’s set up to help you get the shot.”

Their vlog captures exactly that — a blend of craft, precision, and curiosity.
