The Future Is Watching You Surf: Meet Surf Eye

The AI-Camera System Changing How Surfers Relive Their Sessions

Surfing is one of the most exhilarating sports on earth. But ask any surfer, and they’ll tell you: getting your sessions filmed is often harder than landing the perfect turn.

You finally ride that wave, the one that feels like magic. But when it’s over? No footage. No proof. Just a memory.

That’s the problem Surf Eye set out to solve.

Surf Eye was founded in Portugal in 2022 by Italian entrepreneur Alessandro Fracassi (27) and Irish technology expert Andrew East (32). Everything began with a simple insight: surfers want to see their waves.

Unless you’re a pro, in a lesson or lucky enough to have a friend filming from the beach, high-quality surf footage is rare. So Surf Eye decided to build a solution.

After months of development and testing, they installed their first AI-powered camera in the ocean at Caparica, just outside Lisbon. It was an instant hit.

As Surf Eye gained traction along the Portuguese coast, a new big opportunity began to take shape: surf parks. Alessandro and Andrew saw the potential early on: a controlled environment, consistent waves, and a growing global community. Surf Eye’s technology was built for this.

In January 2024, the team took the leap, launching their first wave pool partnership in New York, marking the start of a new chapter for the start-up.

Less than a year later, Surf Eye is now working with 12 surf parks across the globe, becoming the first and largest AI-powered camera wave pool network in the world.

And now, it’s officially live at Alaïa Bay.

So, what is Surf Eye Exactly?

For those curious about what goes on behind the camera – quite literally – Surf Eye is an AI-powered system that uses machine learning and computer vision to automatically detect, track, and edit every wave surfed. Every surfer, from beginning to end.

What sets Surf Eye apart is its ability to follow multiple surfers on the same wave simultaneously, with each ride individually tracked and captured from start to finish. Whether it’s one, three, or five surfers on a wave, Surf Eye sees them all. It’s something no traditional filming setup can do.

Once the session is complete, the system uses intelligent grouping to organize waves into a personal album for each surfer—ready to preview, download, and share in just a few clicks. Its custom mechanism sorts clips based on surf style and movement patterns, much like a videographer would, but fully automated and scalable.

Privacy is built into the experience: only surfers who’ve checked in can access their footage, making the process secure, personalised, and streamlined.

How does Surf Eye operate in Alaïa Bay?
